HydroCare Routine

Understanding the "Flow"

For a newborn with Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney due to urine buildup), the routine focuses on one golden rule: Keep it moving.

🍼

1. Frequent Intake

More fluid in equals more flushing of the urinary tract.

🛡️

2. Strict Hygiene

Preventing bacteria from entering is critical to avoid UTIs.

⚖️

3. Monitor Output

Wet diapers are your primary data point for kidney function.

Calculations are based on standard fluid requirements (150ml/kg/day). Always follow your nephrologist's specific volume limits if any.

The "Why" & "How"

Deep dive into the specifics of eating, potting, and hygiene for hydronephrosis.

Feeding Strategy: The "Flush"

With hydronephrosis, the goal isn't just nutrition; it's maintaining renal flow. Dehydration causes urine to concentrate, which can lead to crystal formation or stones, and makes bacterial growth easier.

  • On Demand + Limits: Feed whenever hungry, but do not let the baby go more than 3-4 hours without feeding, even at night initially.
  • No Water: Newborns generally do not need extra water. Breast milk or formula provides the correct solute load. Water can mess up electrolytes.
  • Cluster Feeding: This is normal in evenings. It helps build a fluid reserve for the longer sleep stretch.
